The Aveo has been bumped up on the list of the worst vehicles I have ever driven . I get you guys don’t want Mazda to die, but this thing is awful. It has the ride quality of the FiST with none of the fun. The FiST’s blast pipe drone was less noticeable than the road noise that this produces. The seating position rivals my 4Runner’s awful one. The infotainment is the worst. It’s 4Runner slow. Why didn’t buyers of these drive literally anything else? The Tiguan was more fun, and better at absolutely everything else.

Damn! but everything I’ve read and seen says this is the “Holy Grail” of mainstream crossovers?!

I saw a bunch of reviews for the new turbo version and all of them universally praised it. Perhaps slapping a turbo on it makes them ignore everything else.

The Mazda badge makes them ignore everything else, they make the Miata ya know. The fit and finish isn’t bad at all, and the materials are fine. The trans shifts are quick and smooth.

It’s not all bad, but it’s not good. At all. The most shocking thing to me is the ride and seating position. I have short legs, and my knees are bent with the seat all of the way back.

I’ll never buy one of their new cars that isn’t a Miata/RX-whatever (a man can dream) s o.... As long as they keep making the best looking crossovers....

I still think they are over designed. The lip injections are too much.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s not as bad on this, but on the CX-9, it’s awful.

Different trim levels help as well. Rental’s usually are the worst while test fleets are generally high end.

Gotta disagree with you there, but I'll at least say we have better crossover designs now than a few years ago. Really digging Volvo, Ford, Mazda, and Acura, to name a few

Because the steering on the Tiguan is vague and too over boosted and the CX-5 is better at passing on the highway and has a less gravelly engine note and a crisp er manumatic mode .

Of course, none of this stuff matters to the average crossover shopper.

The steering on the Tiguan is fine, it’s less mushy than the brakes on this thing. The engine note  in the Tiguan is barely there, and this sounds pretty awful. And oh hell no it’s not better at highway passing, the Tiguan has low end and mid-range torque.

Oof, now that’s a hot take. I can’t argue anything, as I’ve only driven the first generation. But damn an Aveo over this!

Anything wrong again with the GTI or they just fixing the paint?

Fixing the paint, and possibly, but it might just be something they left loose. But probably the steering rack.

First to check a rattle, if it’s something they left loose, then it goes to the body shop.

If it’s something else broken, they are holding it until I tell VW to buy the fucking Lemon back, or I’m law yering up.

There are thousands of Mk7's running around without issue. Other than my issues, I still love the car. This one is either just a  lemon, or being ruined by the dealer.

The past 3 CX-5s I’ve driven have had firm pedals. Maybe your example has air in the lines.

Maybe it’s just our shitty Canadian gas but the Tiguan I drove fe lt as slow as my Crown Vic on the highway. Between the turbo lag, the slushy shifts and the way it falls off at higher RPMs it just felt like it had no balls when I mashed the gas to pass from 70 MPH or so .

The Mazda ha s no torque and is still not quick  by any stretch of the imagination but the kick down is quick and the power was right there when I needed it. I have to admit, Sport Mode helped a lot.

I’m guessing you are referring to a last gen Tiguan. On 87, there is no noticeable lag.

Mazda’s infotainment is actually only second to Uconnect for  me. I love the controller and hate all touch screens. I’ve driven the CX-5 and find it to be at the top of it’s class in everything except size. Is it the best at anything, probably not, but it is sure better than most of it’s competition overall.

I don’t see any of what you are seeing. The infotainment is incredibly distracting to use.

And the ride quality and noise put it way down the best list. Those are just unforgivable. The blast pipe on my ST was less headache inducing.

I’m definitely talking about the current one. On Canadian 87 (think Cali gas) there was enough lag that when coupled with the mushy shifts was quite annoying . That being said, it probably isn’t anything someone who’s used to turbo cars would notice . The turbo lag itself is no worse than the turbo lag of an R56 Cooper S .   The Tiguan also ran out of puff around 4k and  felt a little underdamped at passing speeds, although I find the same issue with most cars not having good enough high-speed damping on Onterrible’s dismally pockmarked highways.

I wanted to like the new Tiguan , and the interior is still great and I still think it looks great, but it’s just as boring to drive as most other compact crossovers . I was hoping for an experience more like the old Tiguan or the CX-5 but it just didn’t deliver.

The Tiguan should be fully spoiled at 1500rpm, and it’s much more enjoyable to drive. It’s not lying to itself. It knows it’s not sporty, so it’s comfortable. The CX-5 feels like they put solid beams in as shocks. It’s bad, and it doesn’t help it going into corners. Trust me, I’ve already put it through it’s paces.

You think the road noise is bad on the Cx3? Try a Golf Alltrack. (hon estly all the small CUVs have atrocious road noise, the Kona is only slightly better) The ride qua lity plus the uncomfortable seats moved the CX3 down the list when we tested it. On a curvy back road the handling and steering feedback are quite good by the standards of the class, but the Kona’s ride is miles better and it has higher actual grip... sadly the steering has typical Hyundai electric steering lack-of-feedback. if I could put the steering from the CX3 in the Kona and cut some of that road noise I’d be pretty damn happy. A s is the Kona’s scoot (with the AWD I think it’s actually quite a bit quicker than the FieSTa from 0-3 0ish) and comfort and road-holding provide a not terribly sad replacement for the FIST.

I thought the seat in the trim I had was comphy. But since I was just smogging it I didn’t drive it.

But it’s sad it basically has the same rear legroom as our Golf.  https://oppositelock.kinja.com/mazda-cx-5-rental-review-vs-a-mkvii-golf-1832343859

I guess a large part of it is personal preference. My preferred suspension stiffness is somewhere between a Nismo 370Z and a  W204 Mercedes C 63 so I found the CX-5 to feel really good for a non-performance compact crossover.

Dumb question but did you put the seat all the way down? That’s usually the problem I run into in most cars, including the CX-5 Hertz brought in.

Yup! It has the same height adjustment as the Golf, so I automatically went for that when I couldn’t scoot back any farther. For reference, I’m only 6'.

Well, I guess it doesn’t surprise me. German cars are the only ones where I actually have to reach when I put the seat all the way back.

I think the Fiesta was designed by ze Germans, so I guess I’m still sort of right.

But now I remember the Focus rental I had was the same way. Although with the seat in my driving position you couldn’t sit behind me, and I’m shorter than you (or am I?!?), so that’s sad.

I dont even have to look at the screen to switch between apps or changing things. Just reach for the co troller without a second thought and go. No clue hwhy you find it so distracting compared to looking at a screen to figure out where to touch.

The oem tires are garbage, as are most of the cars s till using oem tires that ive driven. The ride and sound from the tires is great improved with a simple switch.

1. The submenus to menus are stupid. I have to scroll through them, often, because my phone gets “dropped”(still selectable) every three minutes.

2. The screen is in a horrible position, and good touch screens are a much better solution. It’s the worst infotainment system I've ever used.

Kinja'd!!! Ram_Riot_6 > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies

Interesting. My phone has never been dropped.

The screen is in an ideal position for me at the top of the dash. not far out of my usual line of site and better than ones integrated lower into the dash.

It’s definitely personal taste and that’s the good things about having so many choices on the market . No single design choice meets everyone’s needs and expectations . For me touch screens, specifically Honda and T oyo ta, are not desirable . I have touched my screen maybe 5 times in the nearly three years I’ve owned it.
